Working with Stora Enso Building and Living, we were commissioned to organise a three-day study tour for the Mayor of Espoo and a party of 27 politicians and senior local government officials.
Espoo is the second largest city in Finland and is the best performing city for results in schools and education. The City Council is planning to build sixteen new schools in the next three years and is interested to follow the UK's lead on building high quality schools from Cross Laminated Timber.
The programme included visits to a specialist school for profound and multiple learning difficulties then under construction in the London Borough of Hackney and two fully operational primary schools in Manchester and Chester where they were welcomed by the Head Teachers & key members of staff, School Governors and Local Authority representatives.
The Mayor and his team were keen to hear from the teaching staff about their experience of working and teaching in a timber building, the potential benefits to pupils and how the buildings perform in terms of energy and other key factors. There was also the opportunity for open discussion with the attending local authority representatives.
The tour completed with a bespoke morning seminar on The Role of CLT in Education - click here for programme
